Now, I do not want anyone to think I was surprised by this. A couple days ago I browsed through the wares of some of our sponsors. I was looking for many things, including some B/S wood and topwood for my first build where I would be doing my bending. I picked out a set of imbuia from Bob C. I also ordered a Lutz top set. I picked up from the Post Office today and came home with it. The beautifully matched backs are more inspiring than they appeared in the photos. The sides complement the back perfectly. Bob had indicated that it would sound somewhat like walnut and would work well with handtools. Well, what I was not prepared for was the very fine pore structure- not as "poreless" as maple, but close. To me this means I will not have to risk loss of the grain highlights to excessive filling and also, my desire to do a french polish should be less trying with this nice dense but at the same time, lightweight wood. The top halves are of finer quality than my poor talents deserve. The plan is to do a 12 fret-short scale "Martin-style" slope dread twelve string. Bob's fine woods have challenged me to really try to fine tune my skills as much as possible on the two 000 walnut/spruce/WR guitars now in progress.And, with this great stuff to work with I will have to favor John Hall's bender real soon. Thanks Bob.

Mike I am very happy to hear that. French polish on imbuia will really bring out the figure in that wood. As for the moniker "Zoot Man" maybe Steve Kinnaird will jump in here with "The Real Story"

Zoot Suit - basically an extravagent suit. They tend to have balloon pants that also tend to also be high-waisted. They also have very long coats that have much shoulder padding.

Bob got the name from the "zoot" characteristics of his wood. There was never just a plain-jane set of wood. There is always lots of figure and "character" in the wood.

Try and think of the episode from Seinfeld where Kramer dresses up as a pimp. Now apply that imagery to Bob, or at least his wood, and there you have it. ZOOTELICIOUS!!!!!

Just thought I'd chime in here with a word of praise for Bob and his wood. On a recent trip, I had the opportunity to swing through Bob's home town and briefly visit his shop. It was a pleasure meeting Bob, and he was very patient and helpful as I pawed through a big stack of curly anigre, as well as some fretboards, binding, and stuff. The anigre sets I picked out are incredible - or should I say, seriously zoot - can't wait to build with them. Everything was very reasonably priced, plus a 10% OLF discount, AND he sold me three pieces of curly anigre neck stock at his cost. Thanks, Zoot Man!

BTW, as I understand it, the term "zoot" originated as part of the slang of early jazz culture (the term "jazz", being part of that slang, originally meant sex), and was used to describe all kinds of things, meaning something like "fancy".

So, Bob, when you do up some more curly maple 7 lam neck blanks and I ask you to band saw out two rough blanks for 12 fret please put that sticker on the fretboard flat-easier to scrape off or leave there for posterity. Really, when you do those , let me know-would be great for my twelve string.Remember, all I did that started this is say thanks in public.And, thanks again Zoot.
